Yet another Chinese mobile manufacturer, Oppo, has drawn plans to start manufacturing mobile phones in the country.
As a first step, Oppo has started assembling mobile phones in Foxconn plant on a trial basis. Foxconn plant is located in Sri City Special Economic Zone, about 60 km from Chennai.
On Friday, Kai Feng, Oppo Vice General Manager rolled out Oppo’s 4G Neo7 smartphones and announced that they were putting an end to 3G handsets in India.
Talking to reporters, he said that since August 2015, they were utilising Foxconn facility to assemble some hundreds of 4G mobile phones. After ensuring that these handsets passed the stringent quality test, Oppo’s top management would think about putting up a
manufacturing plant.
“In India, we will produce 4G models alone. We are planning to put up a manufacturing plant by the end of 2016. No land has been acquired and we have not decided about the production capacity or the location,” he said.
Mentioning that they occupied second slot in 4G handset sales in China after Apple, he said they had plans to sell 15 lakh handsets by March 2016. This year, Oppo had already sold four lakh pieces.
“In Tamil Nadu, we have sold 40,000 pieces and we are targeting to sell 1.5 lakh smartphones by March 2016.
We plan to launch new products ranging from Rs.8,000 to Rs.20,000 through multi-brand stores and exclusive showrooms. We have our showrooms in Chennai and Tiruchi. Madurai showroom will be opened soon,” he said.
